I’m not saying that measuring some of these can’t be useful once you’ve really understood that you have a specific problem in the relevant area, but these are not real performance metrics. You know, outcome over output…

The SPACE framework changed my entire perspective on measuring developer productivity. Created by researchers from GitHub, Microsoft, and the University of Victoria, it breaks down productivity into five critical dimensions that actually matter. Let’s dive into each one.
What is the SPACE framework?
The SPACE framework gives engineering leaders a multidimensional lens to actually understand engineering effectiveness, not just mindlessly track output. Developed by Nicole Forsgren, Margaret-Anne Storey, and their team at Microsoft Research in 2021, it’s essentially a rebellion against the shallow “how many tickets did you close?” metrics that plague our industry.
Unlike the garbage productivity metrics most companies still use, SPACE acknowledges that engineers aren’t just code-producing robots. It looks at Satisfaction and well-being alongside Performance, Activity, Communication, and Efficiency. It’s the first framework I’ve seen that doesn’t pretend developer happiness is some optional nice-to-have rather than a fundamental driver of sustainable engineering excellence.
Satisfaction and Well-being: The Foundation
This dimension hits close to home. At a previous company, we lost three engineers in two months before realizing we had a burnout issue. Developer happiness isn’t (just) about free snacks and ping pong tables – it’s about sustainable work patterns and meaningful impact.

- Share data transparently
- Let teams own their solutions
- Stick with it long enough to see real change
- Adjust based on results, not arbitrary timeframes
Remember – the goal isn’t to have perfect metrics. The goal is to build a more effective engineering organization. Use SPACE as a tool toward that end, not as an end in itself.
